Chairperson’s Message

“The ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
Steve Jobs

Dear fellow mediators and mediation advocates,

The Society of Mediation Professionals (Singapore) (SMP) was conceived and founded by a group of passionate peacemakers, all driven by an intense desire to propel mediation in Singapore into a dispute resolution process, vocation and occupation practiced by professionals: trained, accredited and experienced mediators and mediation advocates.

SMP came into existence when it was registered as a society on 14 January 2015. Since then, members of the executive committee have worked hard to mold and shape SMP to be relevant to mediation professionals in Singapore. In the past year, SMP’s work and achievements have included the following:

  1. at Ministry of Law’s invitation, providing feedback, views and concerns expressed by members and mediators on the Mediation Bill;
  2. supporting the continual education of members and mediators, through its support of mediation courses conducted by Pepperdine University School of Law (Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution) and Regent’s University London (school of Psychotherapy & Psychology);
  3. organising social and educational events for members and mediators to interact, bond and learn from fellow mediators.

There is much more to be done to achieve SMP’s vision of developing, hosting and representing a community of professional mediators and mediation advocates who:

  1. adhere to the highest ethical standards;
  2. are accepted by the public as possessing special training, accreditation, knowledge and skills derived from research, education, training and practice at the highest level; and
  3. are prepared to apply their discipline and knowledge and exercise their skills in the practice of mediation.

On behalf of the executive committee, I hope that each of you reading this message will join us in our quest. Be a member or join us in our activities. We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
